Welcome to the new school year!

Year 1 April 2008

I would like to welcome the Year 1 children back for the Summer Terms.

In Literacy this term our topic will be 'Under the Sea' and we will be reading fiction and non-fiction information books relating to this topic.  The children have helped me plan how to set up our role-play corner as an under sea kingdom.  I would be grateful for any items relating to this topic such as sea life toy, collections of shells, posters or pictures of under the sea, a snorkel and mask, dressing up clothes for a mermaid, pirate or diver etc., and any broken or toy jewellery to put in our treasure chest.  I will make sure it is returned to you after we have completed the topic.  The children will also be making things to use in the role-play corner as part of their Literacy activities.

We will also continue to work daily on our 'Letters and Sounds', which will involve blending words for reading, segmenting words for spelling, learning to read High Frequency words, tricky word and plenty of work on reading and constructing sentences and captions.

In Numeracy this term, the children will continue to learn about place value, addition, subtraction, mental calculations, estimation, solving problems using money and time, measures, and organising and using data.

Our topic in PHSE this half term is called 'Relationships' and the children will get involved in circle time activities that will help them think about understanding and managing their feelings, and about how different people are important to us in our lives.

In Religious Education, the children will be learning about 'People in Christianity'.

We will be doing a variety of dances this term, including some circle dances, and in music the children will be exploring instruments and symbols.

Reading books will still be changed three times a week whenever possible.  Please would you sign your name or put a tick when your child has read his/her book so that we know that it is ready to be changed.  Spellings will still be done every Friday morning.

I hope that the children enjoy their summer term.
