Welcome to the new school year!

Class 3 - Autumn 2009

During term 1, the focus for English with Miss Burrow will be information books and will also link to our History Topic of Victorians.  We will be aiming to produce our own class information book about famous Victorians.  In term 2 we will be looking at the features of report writing.

In grammar lessons we will be concentrating on nouns, verbs and tenses.  The importance of punctuation will be reinforced, and through Big Write activities the children will be set individual targets for their writing.  We will begin the Year 3 and 4 program for handwriting as appropriate.

In Maths with Miss Burrow, the main focus for the two terms will be place value, mental methods of calculating, number patterns, fractions and problem solving.

In Science during term 1, the children will be studying the topic of Ourselves, looking at teeth, oral hygiene and eating.  During term 2 we will be investigating forces including magnets, springs and elastic forces.

In Art we will be experimenting with sketching techniques, including creating portraits, conveying emotions and matching tones and shades.  In term 2 we will link Art to the Victorians by looking at the printing and pattern work of William Morris.

The Design and Technology project for the two terms has a focus on levers and mechanisms which can be used to create string puppets.

Year 3 children will begin the Catherine Cheater scheme of work for French.  Here there is a focus on learning basic vocabulary through songs, finger rhymes, games and stories.  Year 4 children will be revisiting vocabulary learnt so far and developing the language further.  This will include talking and writing French.

In History we will be studying the Victorians.  Looking at where the Victorians were in History, why they were called Victorians, considering what life was like for rich and poor, finding out about famous Victorians and their achievements and looking at Victorian schools.
